A Pagan Charity

It is the beginning of the 2006 hurricane season in the southern US.  There’s a major volcano erupting in the southern Pacific.  There always seems to be a situation out there requiring the assistance of people who care.

Last year our Chancellor General, Joie, proposed that we create a charity branch of our organization to raise funds for disaster relief efforts.  Many Pagans expressed concerns about large NGOs with large overhead costs that eat up much of the money donated to them.  Some have written to tell us that in the past, when they’ve tried to forward funds and goods from their organization’s fund raising efforts to Christian aid organizations, these things have been turned away as the recipients refused to accept anything from Pagans.  This is especially frustrating in light of several churches and government officials recently claiming that Pagans don’t do anything for their communities.

Officers of Avalon went ahead and proved them wrong.  Officer of Avalon’s operating costs are modest and entirely covered by the dues of our members.  None of the Grand Preceptory (our board of directors) receive remuneration of any sort for the work that we do for Officers of Avalon.  We’re all volunteers.  We are endeavoring to have 100% of the money collected by our Avalon Cares project go to relief efforts.

Last year Avalon Cares raised over $28,000 for relief efforts.  We rented trucks and ferried relief supplies into Mississippi and Louisiana for hurricane victims (see sidebar photos).  We shipped replacement uniforms to police officers in New Orleans.  This is just a start.

Help us put the word out and make your donations to Avalon Cares, a Pagan relief network.
